Branch Manager, Kathy Birney, Retires Kathy Birney started working for the library as a clerk at the Clark Branch Library in 1993, then became a beloved Children’s Librarian at the main library before settling in as the Branch Manager in Scio in 1998. As the Scio Branch Manager for over 25 years, Kathy’s talents truly shone. She made her customers feel like family and always looked forward to helping individuals find the perfect book, figure out computer issues, or was just willing to take a moment to chat. Library Patron, Cindy Zantene, shared, “Kathy is everyone’s best friend and a wonderful librarian. My grandson, Sully, loves talking to her, and she always helps us find the best books!” Kathy has shepherded countless children & adults towards books that they would love over the years. With her retirement, the Scio Branch is losing its longest-serving and most devoted Branch Manager. Kathy truly listened to everyone who walked through her doors. She was known for going above just finding the perfect book. She was especially keen at focusing on her patron’s needs. One individual she enjoyed assisting with the computer and printing his photos is a well-known local, E.D. Shumaker, who said, “Kathy is one of those individuals that has the rare ability to do her job well and make you feel good while she is doing it. She is respectful, polite, and does a wonderful job satisfying your problems. She will be missed!” Kathy was always the most knowledgeable about procedures and customer service. She was our library system’s go-to for training and helped lay a foundation built on customer service and making sure that the patron came first. As Branch Manager, Kathy has been a fixture in the community. She embraced change and was key in the successful move from the small storefront library to the current expanded location with convenient parking, meeting rooms and now the Barr Community Center services. For years, the branch library worked with the school where she hosted afterschool reading clubs and many other programs. One of the anticipated, highly popular programs was the community Christmas celebration. Cindy Spiker shared, “My husband and I have had a lot of fun working with Kathy as we helped host the numerous Christmas programs taken place at the library. Through the years, it was good to know that I could always depend on my local librarian, Kathy, who was not only my librarian but also became my friend.” In response to this dedication to community, this year’s Scio Summer Fest theme is, “Celebrating 30 Years of the Scio Branch Library Puskarich Public Library." Library Director, Sandi Thompson, expressed, “Much of this recognition is due to Kathy Birney’s work and commitment to the area here. She has been an unwavering proponent of the library. With Kathy’s retirement, her wisdom, leadership, and devotion to her patrons will be solely missed.” Kathy has seen the library change throughout her over 30 years of service. However, she has always kept the needs of her community at the forefront and customer service her first priority. The Puskarich Public Library System is certainly a much better library system due to the contributions and dedication of one special Branch Manager, Kathy Birney. 30 Years of Service and Devotion

We hope that by officially being fine free, we can encourage our patrons to continue using the library. Understandably, people live very busy lives, and being a few days late with a library book shouldn't keep anyone from coming back and visiting the library. Scio Branch Celebrating 30 Years The Scio Branch Library has been a steadfast pillar of knowledge and community for three decades. From its beginning in April 1994, the library has grown to become a cherished resource offering a multitude of services to patrons of all ages. As we commemorate this milestone anniversary, we reflect on the journey that has made the Scio Branch Library what is is today. The story of the Scio Branch Library began with a vision to provide accessible resources and a welcoming space for the local community. Led by Sandi Thompson, Scio Branch’s first branch manager, who later became the 2023 Ohio Library Council Librarian of the Year and the current Director of the Puskarich Public Library System, the library opened its doors with a commitment to serve and enrich the lives of its patrons. Despite its size, the Scio Branch Library has consistently impacted above its weight, earning a reputation for being "small, but mighty." from the start, as depicted in the 1994 News-Herald article. This characterization rings true through its diverse offerings. Beyond shelves lined with books spanning every genre and interest, the library boasts modern amenities including computers and printing services. The programming tailored for all ages—from storytime for toddlers to technology workshops for adults—further demonstrates its role as a Scio community hub. Beyond its physical offerings, the Scio Branch Library has been a place where friendships are forged, ideas are exchanged, and lifelong learning thrives. None of these achievements would have been possible without the support of the Scio community. The library extends its deepest gratitude to its patrons who have embraced and enriched its mission over the years. Their enthusiasm, feedback, and continuous patronage have fueled its commitment to excellence. As the Scio Branch Library celebrates its 30th anniversary, it looks forward to continuing its commitment to service.Watch for a float commemorating the library ‘s 30 years in the community at the Scio Summer Fest parade on August 9th starting at 6:30pm!
As summer comes to a close, we are looking back on the summer of learning and exploration we experienced at the Puskarich Library, Clark Memorial Branch Library, and Scio Branch Library. This summer's theme of adventure has taken us on an exciting journey. Throughout these months, we dove into the realm of pollinators, discovering their vital role in our ecosystem. We've celebrated Christmas in July with joyous festivities, bringing a touch of holiday magic to the warm summer days. The glow party illuminated our afternoon with dancing and fun, while geocaching provided us with exciting outdoor adventures that sparked our sense of discovery. Learning about outdoor safety has empowered us with essential knowledge, ensuring we can explore the world around us responsibly. The tales of pirates and boats transported us to distant shores and high seas, igniting our imaginations with tales of daring and adventure down the library river. We battled it out each week to pick a winner of the Book Battle, all while hearing stories from some of our beloved community members. As we eagerly anticipate the waterpark adventure this August, we are filled with gratitude for the experiences we've shared on this summer’s adventure. Thank you to all who made this summer reading full of fun and learning. Your commitment to promoting literacy and exploration has made a lasting impact on all of us. Let us continue this journey of discovery through the pages of books, where every story is a new adventure waiting to unfold. Here's to many more summers of learning, fun, and unforgettable experiences at our libraries. A huge thank you to the following organizations, businesses, and individuals for dedicating their time to our library of learners: The Village Network, Harrison Soil and Water Conservation District, Brittany Mattern and Julie Carman of B’s Bouquets, Daniel Caron, Cooking Caravan, Harrison County OSU Extension 4H Educators, Muskingum Watershed Troy Thompson and Kristy Dickey, Friends of the Puskarich Library, Friends of the Clark Memorial Branch Library, Susan Cripe, Marge Monroe, Kim Ferrell, Andrew Markland, Kathy Birney, Sandi Thompson, Dayan Arigoni, Bree Patterson, Rebecca Agostini, Kristen Willis, Heidi Shaw, Cindy Maleski, Angie Smith, Stacey Bardall, Jenn Bardall, Bethany Doane, Dominoes Pizza, and B&F Dairy Bar.
